2010 The Metropolitan Betting & Odds Lead by Herculian Prince

September 30th, 2010

The betting markets for the 2010 The Metropolitan at Randwick this Saturday have opened at Sportsbet and the punters and bookies are backing Herculian Prince to atone for his last start failure, installing the gelding as the hot favourite.

The Gai Waterhouse-trained Herculian Prince was the $1.40 favourite to win the Colin Stephen Quality at Randwick last weekend, but faded to finish dead last.

Despite the five-year-olds’ poor last start, Herculian Prince is the current $3.20 favourite at Sportsbet to return to form and win the $400,000 Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) on Saturday.

Herculian Prince has drawn mid-field with barrier six and will be ridden by Nash Rawiller, the jockey aboard for the Colin Stephen failure.

The second elect to win The Metropolitan is $4.80 chance Mr Charlie.

The Peter Moody-trained Mr Charlie is a Kiwi galloper that took out the New Zealand St Leger back in the Autumn.

After winning over 1700m in their Australian debut at Flemington on September 4, Mr Charlie backed up with a fifth place finish in the Naturalism Stakes at Caulfield last start.

Two other horses in The Metropolitan field are at single figure odds to win with No Wine No Song at $7 and Hawk Island paying $9.

No Wine No Song was the upset winner of the Colin Stephen last Saturday, the Kevin Moses-trained nine-year-old a top chance to make it back-to-back victories having drawn the prized barrier one for The Metropolitan.

The Chris Waller-trained Hawk Island is drawn wider with barrier 11, but the punters are still getting behind the Wyong Cup winner to cause an upset.

For us the best value runner is Landlocked paying $13, the Anthony Cummings-trained Zabeel four-year-old coming off consistent form and well drawn in barrier two.

Other top chances to Place on Saturday include Colin Stephen runner-up Get up Jude (barrier seven), and the super consistent seven-year-old Crabs*(barrier eight) coming off four successive wins.

The 2010 Daily Telegraph The Metropolitan is scheduled as Race 7 at Randwick on Saturday and is due to jump at 3:30pm.
