The second Group 1 feature of the race was a very interesting one indeed with Herculian Prince putting on a stunning performance to take the win in the $400,000 event.
Herculian Prince got off to strong start and led the field from the start. In fact, the Gai Waterhouse-trained gelding pulled ahead by a massive six or seven lengths at one point. No Wine No Song was running in a very distance second.
The Waterhouse gelding’s lead was shortened going into the home stretch as jockey Nash Rawiller let the horse ease up. This allowed Mourayan to burst out into the lead with Herculian Prince taking chase. It wasn’t until the last 300 metres that the five-year-old gelding overtook Mourayan and snatched the win.
Race favourite Mr Charlie had a disappointing run after falling off the pace early on. Despite his efforts he was unable to catch up to the race leaders.
Results: Herculian Prince ($4.80), Mourayan ($21.00), No Wine No Song ($7.00)
