Trainer David Vandyke is hopeful that Lamasery will be able to secure his first group 1 win when he lines up for the 2012 The Metropolitan at Royal Randwick Racecourse tomorrow.
Lamasery won the Group 2 Hill Stakes at Royal Randwick Racecourse last start and is out to become the first horse in more than 50 years to take out the elusive race double.
The Commands gelding finished third in The Metropolitan last year behind The Verminator and Hawk Island.
However, Vandyke is confident that Lamasery has the ability to go two better in this year’s The Metropolitan.
“I’m happier with his appearance going into The Metropolitan than I was last year,” Vandyke said.
“I don’t think he was suited backing up into the ‘Metrop’ last spring.
“He had won the Kingston Town Stakes, then two weeks later the Colin Stephen Quality then went straight into the ‘Metrop’. It wasn’t ideal for this horse.
“But this time he has had a nice two weeks between runs since he won the Hill Stakes and that suits him better.”
The trainer also feels the six-year-old is better within himself, which will aid Lamasery’s attempt at the $400,000 race.
“He is about 12kg heavier now than when he was going into the race last year,” Vandyke said.
“I see that as an indication that he is a stronger horse now.”
Lamasery has won 11 of his 21 race starts and has earned more than $600,000 in prize money.
The gelding is currently on a comeback campaign after spending a year on the sidelines due to injury.
