Queenstown to Ramp Up 2014 Metropolitan Prep in Winter Challenge

August 1st, 2014

Returning to the track in typically impressive form this season, talented mare Queenstown is likely to contest a 2014 spring racing path geared towards the featured Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) at Royal Randwick on October 4th following this weekend’s Listed Winter Challenge (1500m) at Rosehill.

Running on to finish third in the Octagonal Handicap (1400m) first-up on May 31st, Queenstown was unlucky to be blocked for a run in the final straight and fifth in the Listed Mercedes Benz Centenary Mile (1600m) on June 21st but responded in the best way possible when strolling home to win the Listed Grafton Cup (2350m) by more than three lengths last time out.

Having maintained clear favouritism for this weekend’s Rosehill Gardens feature, Mark Newnham, stable foreman for trainer Gai Waterhouse said the team is thrilled with the way the lightly-raced mare has taken to her current preparation and recent work, and is confident of a continued build in form and class through spring.

“She is well enough to sprint really well,” Newnham told AAP.

“She never runs badly. She is one of those mares who runs well in whatever you put her in.

“She has had a fairly easy time of it and she has freshened up to run well.

“She hasn’t had a lot of racing and hopefully the best is yet to come.”

Securing an impressive total of five wins and eight minor places from just 16 competitive starts so far, Queenstown was a standout performer over five race starts through the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, failing to finish outside the places.

While claiming just one race win amongst the five, the Stratum mare finished third amongst classy competition in the Listed Zipping Classic (2400m) and claimed close second placings in both the Group 3 Angst Stakes (1600m) and Group 2 Momentum Energy Stakes (2000m) most notably.

While yet to confirm a path for the five-year-old, the Group 3 Newcastle Cup (2300m) in September is likely to figure before the major goal of The Metropolitan in October.
