Greatwood Likely to Progress to 2014 Metropolitan

September 12th, 2014

A leading chance for this weekend’s Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill Gardens, stable foreman for trainer Gai Waterhouse Mark Newnham has revealed the result with determine whether or not Greatwood will contest the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick on October 4th.

Beginning his racing career under the guidance of leading European trainer Luca Cumani before transferring to the care of Waterhouse at the conclusion of 2013, Greatwood has quickly built to the task over two Australian starts; finishing third amongst classy company in the Canterbury Hurlstone RSL Handicap (1400m) before charging home to win the Listed Premier’s Cup (1800m) by two lengths on August 30th.

Understandably pleased with the Manduro gelding’s introduction to Australian racing, Newnham told the Sportsman it is a thrill to saddle a European runner to immediate success; something that is often not the case.

“I think we have already seen that he’s going to be up to the grade,” Newnham said.

“After his first run Tommy (Berry) got off him and named him as a Metropolitan style horse and he came out the other day and confirmed that.

“Some of them adapt straight away and some take a while but he is one that has certainly adapted really quickly.

“One of the attributes that he has is that he has good barrier speed which a lot of European horses don’t.

“He’s only a lightly framed horse so he won’t improve much with fitness but with the experience of our racing, even though he has adapted well.”

Securing a commendable total of two wins and six minor places from just ten competitive starts to date, Greatwood is currently offered a great chance of overcoming a field of 14 in the Kingston Towns Stakes this weekend, and is available at odds of $4.80 for success on the second line of betting.
